Several products in our catalogue are named for the receptor systems they are studied against — GLP-1, GLP-1/GIP, GLP-1/GIP/glucagon. That naming convention is deliberate, and it is worth explaining both what it means and why a research supplier uses it.
What the receptor names denote
GLP-1, GIP and glucagon receptors are three distinct members of the class B G-protein-coupled receptor family. In pharmacological research, peptides are routinely characterised by which of these receptors they engage, and a compound may be described as acting at one, two or three of them. A product named “GLP-1/GIP” is being identified as a dual-receptor compound; “GLP-1/GIP/glucagon” as a triple.
This is receptor pharmacology terminology, and it is descriptive of how a molecule is classified in the literature. It is not a statement about what the compound does in any organism, and nothing here should be read as one.
Why we label this way rather than by brand name
Two reasons, and the first is practical. Several compounds in this space circulate under names that belong to approved pharmaceutical products in various jurisdictions. Using those names for a research-use-only reference material invites a reader to equate the two, and they are not equivalent: an approved medicine is a specific formulation, manufactured under specific controls, authorised for a specific use. A laboratory reference material is none of those things, whatever molecular similarity exists.
The second reason is that receptor nomenclature is more useful. A researcher looking for a compound to characterise against a particular receptor system searches on the receptor, not on a trade name, and grouping the catalogue that way makes it navigable for the people it is meant for.
What to check before ordering in this category
The vial size. Several products in this group are listed at more than one size, and the names are otherwise identical. Read the full product name.
Which receptors are named. Single, dual and triple designations are different products with different sequences, molecular weights and analyses. The difference between “GLP-1/GIP” and “GLP-1/GIP/Glucagon” is one term in a name and an entirely different molecule.
The published analysis. Each product has its own independent reverse-phase HPLC result on its product page, and it is specific to that product rather than to the category.
Analytical notes for the category
Compounds in this class are generally longer peptides, often thirty residues or more, and frequently carry chemical modifications such as fatty-acid chains intended to alter physical properties. Both features matter analytically: longer chains give broader peaks and benefit from wide-pore columns, while a lipid modification substantially increases hydrophobicity and shifts retention late in a gradient. A method suited to a short polar peptide is not suited to these.
