Short synthetic peptides – most of them di-, tri- or tetrapeptides – studied for sequence-specific interaction with DNA and chromatin, and for the gene-expression changes observed in cell culture as a result. This class is defined by mechanism, not by tissue.

Epithalon (Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly) is examined in telomerase-expression and promoter-binding assays. Pinealon (Glu-Asp-Arg) and Cortagen (Ala-Glu-Asp-Pro) appear in neuronal-culture gene-expression work. Cartalax is used in chondrocyte and tenocyte culture models, Chonluten in bronchial epithelial culture, Livagen in hepatocyte models and Cardiogen in myocardial tissue-culture signaling. Their small size and charge distribution are the reason they are studied as chromatin-interacting ligands rather than as receptor agonists.
