The differences that actually matter are less about quality than about time, documentation and recourse.
Transit and customs
A domestic shipment is typically 1 to 5 business days depending on the lane, with tracking throughout. An international shipment adds an unpredictable variable: customs clearance, which can add days and occasionally weeks, and which is not visible in a tracking number until it resolves. For time-bound work — a booked instrument slot, a cell line at a particular passage, a field season — that variance is the cost, and it is not smoothed by ordering earlier because the tail is unpredictable rather than long.
Import responsibility
When material crosses a border, the importer of record has obligations. If you are ordering directly from an overseas seller, that may be you or your institution, and it may involve documentation your purchasing office has not been asked for before. A domestic supplier absorbs that step. Whether that matters depends on your institution’s tolerance for its purchasing office receiving customs correspondence.
Documentation practice
The variance here is wide in both directions. Some overseas manufacturers run analytical operations as rigorous as anything domestic. Others supply a certificate that is effectively a template. The reliable filter is not geography, it is whether the analysis is published, whether it is independent, and whether the supplier can describe the method when asked.
Recourse when something is wrong
This is the substantive difference. If independent testing contradicts a supplier’s figure, what happens next depends on where the supplier is and what commitment they made. A defined remedy from a domestic supplier is straightforwardly actionable. The same promise from a seller in another jurisdiction may be perfectly sincere and considerably harder to act on.
Practical position
Ask where the order ships from, what tracking is issued, who the importer of record is, and what the remedy is if your own analysis disagrees. Those four answers describe the operational reality better than any statement about where a molecule was originally synthesised.
