The consistency argument
Material purchased together is more likely to be homogeneous than material purchased across several months. That matters most for long series where results are compared across time. The arguments against
Buying ahead commits budget early, which some funding structures penalise. It assumes the programme will run as designed, and programmes change. And it puts more material into storage, where responsibility for condition sits entirely with your laboratory — we do not advise on storage, and a longer holding period is a decision your own procedures need to cover.
A reasonable middle
Most laboratories land on buying the full quantity for a defined, funded series and reordering separately for exploratory work. That keeps the comparison-critical material homogeneous without committing budget to experiments that may not happen.
Practical sequencing
Ask about bulk pricing before the first order. Get the institutional purchase order and vendor record in place at the same time, since that is the step that delays an urgent order later. Confirm the published analysis for the product you are committing to, and file it with the programme record rather than with the invoice.
